North Pomfret, Vt. — Jean Chase, 75, died Sunday evening, Oct. 1, 2017, at her home in North Pomfret surrounded by her family.

She was born on Dec. 27, 1941, in Bedford, Bedfordshire, England, the daughter of Albert Edward and Phyllis Mary (Horner) Lowrey. Jean along with her family spent almost every night of her first three years in an air raid shelter. Jean completed her education (equivalent of High School in America) in Bedford, England in 1958 and went to work for the RAF Base in Cardington.

In 1960 she met her future husband, Howard and they married in 1961, They spent the next 56 years together. The Chases moved to the United States in 1962 and Jean began to live the life of a military wife for the next 20 years during which time she gave birth to their four children in four different countries. Upon retiring from the U.S. Navy in 1979 they eventually settled and made their home in North Pomfret. The last 12 years have been split between Vermont and Venice, Fla.

Jean worked for the Sugar Bush farm for 18 years but her passion was spending as much time as possible with her family and the home she made for them all. She had an incredible green thumb that she used for both flower and vegetable gardens. Jean also enjoyed knitting, baking, putting up jam, but most of all time with her children and grandchildren. She was small in stature, but carried a huge personality combined with her distinctive English humor. She will be missed by many.
