Hours before the Marlins’ home opener on Tuesday, Samson said owner Jeffrey Loria might sell before the end of the season — or not at all.
“There’s not a guarantee that a transaction will happen,” Samson said.
He declined to identify any suitors. Former Yankees captain Derek Jeter and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush are reportedly involved separately with groups that have showed interest in buying the team. Joshua Kushner, whose older brother is an adviser to President Donald Trump, had a preliminary agreement to buy the Marlins before breaking off negotiations.
“There’s definitely a lot of interest in the team,” Samson said.
Samson is beginning his 16th season as team president and didn’t rule out remaining on the job if Loria sells. Whether Samson would have a role under a new owner has been part of sale discussions, he said, but he declined to elaborate.
“That’s more of an eighth-inning issue than a fourth-inning issue,” Samson said.
Loria, 76, bought the Marlins for $158.5 million in 2002 from John Henry, part of the Boston Red Sox ownership group that has celebrated three World Series titles. The Marlins won the World Series in 2003, but haven’t been to the postseason since, and haven’t finished above .500 since 2009.
Giants’ Posey on DL
San Francisco
While manager Bruce Bochy said following Monday’s 4-1 victory that Posey was doing fine, the Giants planned to check in with him overnight and re-evaluate him Tuesday.
Braves’ Kemp Out
Miami
Kemp hasn’t played since Friday. He took batting practice Sunday and though the injury isn’t believed to be serious, he went on the DL as a precaution.
He was off to a fast start, going 8 for 16 with four doubles and two homers in the first week of the season.
Wahoo Protesters Want to Get Involved
Cleveland
A group asking the Indians to abolish the red-faced, smiling logo and their nickname gathered outside Progressive Field on Tuesday before the club’s home opener against the Chicago White Sox. Carrying signs that read “Racism Honors No One” and “Real People Not Mascots,” the protesters peacefully voiced their opinions as police officers looked on.
The movement to replace the Wahoo logo has gained momentum in recent years. The Indians have reduced its usage, but the logo, which has been part of the team’s history for more than 60 years, still appears on some of Cleveland’s game caps and jerseys.
The Indians have had talks with MLB about further changes. Commissioner Rob Manfred said during the World Series that he knows “that that particular logo is offensive to some people, and all of us at Major League Baseball understand why.”
Philip Yenyo, executive director of the American Indian Movement of Ohio, said he has been encouraged by the Indians’ openness to address the issue, but he wants more. Yenyo and his group have opposed the team using the logo for profit.
