Enfield — Steve Schneider has announced his resignation as town manager, setting June 1 as the final day of his 11-year tenure in Enfield.

“I think that all three of the Enfield selectmen are really sorry that he’s leaving,” Selectboard Chairman John Kluge said on Monday. “We wish him the absolute best in whatever he decides to undertake next. He’s been a very positive influence in town.”

Schneider, 47, informed the board of his decision to leave on Nov. 21. His contract was scheduled to expire on Dec. 31, 2017.

Schneider, who could not be reached for comment Monday evening, won’t be going far, however. He intends to continue living in the Upper Valley and likely isn’t searching for another job as a town manager, Kluge said.

Property records indicate Schneider and his wife, Sarah, own a home near Mascoma Lake in Enfield.

“He’s been an outstanding town manager and when he told us that he was going to make this decision, our first comment was, ‘What can we do to change your mind?’ ” Kluge said.

“I think it’s just a matter of him feeling somewhat burned out,” he added.

Schneider was hired in Enfield, population 4,600, on Nov. 1, 2005, at the behest of a citizens’ search committee. He started with a salary of $70,000.

Although he grew up in Syracuse, N.Y., Schneider has had a long career in municipal government throughout the Northeast, serving the town offices of Batavia, N.Y.; Tobyhanna Township, Pa.; and Richmond, Vt., before coming to Enfield.

The Selectboard will begin a comprehensive search for a new town manager soon, Kluge said, adding the town will probably hire a firm to help with the effort.

People interested in participating on a search committee are asked to contact the town offices at 603-632-5026 or by emailing manager@enfield.nh.us.
