BETHEL, VT — Geneva M. (Washburn) Gaiko, 89, of Bethel, died Thursday, March 4, 2021 at her home.

She was born on Camp Brook Road on August 29, 1931; the eldest child of Clarence and Lulu (Davenport) Washburn. She attended Flynn School, Camp Brook School and graduated from Whitcomb High School in 1949. Geneva married Louis Gaiko in 1954.

She worked continuously in town for nearly 50 years, first as a bookkeeper at Fyles and Rice Plywood Company (later known as Indian Head Plywood) and for several years as a purchasing agent for GW Plastics. She also filled the position of Office Manager for the town of Bethel until her retirement. Additionally, she co-owned Louis’ New and Used Furniture Store – partnering with her husband until his death, then maintaining the business as sole proprietor for 4 more years.

She was a member of the Rebekah’s and the South Royalton Senior Center, the Bethel Town Hall Restoration Fund, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Town Human Services Advisory Committee. She was honored as the Grand Marshall in the annual Bethel Community Forward Festival. Geneva had the independence and strength inherited from many generations of Vermonters, and a motherly, and generous spirit. She frequently volunteered rides and a helping hand to friends and neighbors.

Geneva enjoyed their camp, “Shaw’s Pasture”, quilting, gardening, feeding the birds, buying and selling used furniture and antiques with her husband. She took pleasure in the companionship of her several pet kitties over the years and watching the birds and wildlife that visited her yard.

Geneva is survived by her three sisters Florence Howell of Randolph, Abbie Traywick of Alabama, and Clara Bryan of Essex; many cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Louis in 2001 and her brother, Clarence E. Washburn, Jr. in 1994.

A graveside service will be held at Fairview Cemetery in Bethel in May. A celebration of her life will be planned for a later date in August. Contributions in her memory can be made to the Bethel Town Hall Fund, 134 So. Main Street, Bethel, VT 05032. Online condolences may be made at www.dayfunerals.com. Arrangements are by the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.
