CLAREMONT, NH — Stephen L. Pickering, 69, passed away on June 11, 2020, at his home in Claremont, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on July 19, 1950 in New Bedford, Massachusetts to Othelia and Melville Pickering and grew up in North Dartmouth MA. He graduated from Dartmouth High School in 1969.
In his leisure time he liked vacationing in warm places and favored women and wine. He operated many different businesses over his career despite never going to college. He had a strong independent personality was articulate and passionate. He could also be kind and tolerant of those around him. He was very creative and could fix anything or help solve most any problem. He was often called the hardest working man you’ve ever met. He liked cigarettes and tequila, neat please. Steve was the guy that could ride a horse as well as he could a motorcycle, weld a steel crane back together, buy a house at a person’s yard sale, make his own dandelion wine, sail a boat, drive an 18-wheeler across country, cook a great steak, represent himself in court, build a house, or anything else you could possibly imagine. He had a dark sense of humor and would often use that to diffuse stressful situations.
Stephen is survived by his four siblings, Elizabeth and Gordon Young of Springfield MA, Marianne Hallett of E Freetown MA, Phillip and Sharon Pickering of Dartmouth MA, Michael Pickering of Claremont NH, his partner, Tammy Jones-Rogers of Claremont NH, his children, Joel Pickering of Northwood NH, Jonathon and Jenny Pickering of Weare NH, Christopher and Jessica Pickering of Hopkinton NH, Matthew Pickering of Claremont NH, and Hannah Pickering of Claremont NH, his grandchildren Katrina & Arianna Pickering, Thomas & Samuel Pickering, Brooke & Haley Pickering, along with many nieces and nephews. Additional loved ones include Mary Pickering of Claremont NH, and Bonita Miles of Claremont NH. He is predeceased by one daughter, Fallon Nicole Heath.
He has been a role model to many and acted as a parent and mentor to many others more. He will be severely missed. Per Steve’s wishes, there will be no services at this time and close family will hold a private event on a future date.
