MacDonald, 27, recorded a pair of victories at Laconia Country Club on Thursday to reach today’s quarterfinal round. The Hanover Country Club golfer opened with a round-of-32 defeat of Windham’s James McKee, 1 up, then convincingly took out the Manchester Golf Matches Association’s Ryan Lebrun in Thursday afternoon’s round of 16, 6 and 4.
MacDonald, who won the New Hampshire Amateur at Eastman Golf Links six years ago and was a finalist at Nashua Country Club in 2011, moves on to a quarterfinal match at 7:24 a.m. today against Matthew Paradis. Concord Country Club’s Paradis swept Loudon’s Bob Landry, 2 and 1, and Pembroke Pines’ Josh LaCasse, 3 and 2, to advance.
Hanover’s Nate Choukas lost his morning match, falling in the round of 32 to former state am champ Jim Cilley of Ridgewood, 3 and 2.
Fall Mountain High graduate Ryan Kohler provided the day’s highlight, going 19 holes to upset top-seeded Ryan Tombs of Manchester Country Club in the round of 16. Kohler, representing Hooper Golf Club in Walpole, opens the quarterfinals today at 7 a.m. against Bretwood’s Damon Salo.
The other quarterfinals pit Salo’s brother, Cameron, against Laconia’s Chris Houston at 7:08 a.m. and Cilley against Rochester’s Jamie Ferullo (who eliminated defending champ Connor Greenleaf on Thursday afternoon) at 7:16 a.m. Winners will play in semifinal matches this afternoon, with the two finalists facing off in the 36-hole championship match on Saturday morning.

Hansen’s time of 16 minutes, 0.87 seconds also easily made the qualifying standard of 16:08.09 for the USA Swimming Speedo Junior Nationals in Minneapolis next month. Hansen, 16, of Hanover, was nearly 18 seconds faster than runner-up Samuel Rice (16:18.17), and he ripped off his fastest lap (29.28 seconds) on his final trip down the pool.
Hansen’s previous best time in the event was 16:15.43.
The Junior Nationals will be held Aug. 8-12 at the University of Minnesota. The New England Seniors continue through Sunday.
White River Junction
Bauti Gallino, Brian Turkington, David Stoffel, Owen Stadheim, Jackson Stotland, Quincy McBride, Pedro Gallino, Arwen Clayton and Matt Alibozek scored for Touchline. Gallino and Nico Mayo-Pushee each had two assists, and Turkington and Caleb Benjamin added one helper apiece. Keeper Tommy Madden made three saves.
Nick Jones scored twice for Hartford, and Shane Miller made seven stops in goal. Norwich Touchline greets MV Pride on Sunday.

After a scoreless first half, Wilson Tire’s Ireland Fielder got things started with a tap in from close range in the 49th minute. Soule’s back-to-back strikes made it 3-0 before Shelby Hanks closed the scoring in the 77th minute. Caroline Borger made five stops in goal for Wilson Tire, which evened its record at 2-2. Throwbacks dropped to 3-6.
