Although they won’t have a game in which to play, four Upper Valley soccer standouts did land spots on the Vermont roster for the Twin State Lions Cup soccer matches recently.
The Hartford duo of Nick Jones and Kaj Boeri was chosen for the boys roster, while Thetford’s Grace Davis and Rivendell’s Kendyl Boisvert landed on the girls roster. Vermont organizers finalized the lineups last week.
Jones ranked sixth in the Upper Valley in scoring last fall with 16 goals, six assists and 22 points, while Boeri locked down the midfield on a Hartford team that allowed just 15 goals in 15 matches. The Hurricanes went 10-5-0, sustaining a first-round upset loss to Missisquoi in the VPA Division II state tournament.
Davis was a key contributor on defense for the Panthers, who posted a 15-2-1 record en route to their third consecutive VPA D-III state championship. Boisvert also concentrated on defense, leading Rivendell (11-7-0) to just its second visit to the VPA D-IV finals in school history.
New Hampshire announced its rosters last fall. They included Hanover’s Charlie Adams and Kyle Doucette, Lebanon’s Kyle Falzarano and Cooper Bourne, Mascoma’s Ben Schwarz and Sunapee’s Michael Mullen among the boys and the Lakers’ Silvia Dalton with the girls.
The annual matches between graduated Vermont and New Hampshire high school soccer stars, originally scheduled for July 18 at Rivier University in Nashua, N.H., was canceled by the coronavirus pandemic last month.
Montcalm picks up N.H. Stroke Play: One of the scheduling victims of Dartmouth College’s decision to close Hanover Country Club has found a new home.
The New Hampshire Stroke Play Championship will be held at Montcalm Golf Club in Enfield on Aug. 12-14. The second of the New Hampshire Golf Association’s two major championships had been set for Hanover CC for the first time and on the same dates before Dartmouth shut the course down when it announced plans to keep its campus closed through the summer term because of coronavirus concerns.
Montcalm director of golf Steve Rogers and the NHGA confirmed the move on Monday. Lebanon’s Patrick Pelletier is the two-time defending champion.
Vermont Open postponed: Lake Morey Country Club will not hold the annual Jeff Julian Memorial Vermont Open as scheduled.
Director of golf Justin Bonnett announced in an email Friday that the golf tournament has been postponed, with the hope of rescheduling in late July. The tourney had been slated for June 20-22.
The state golf open circuit already has already taken a couple of hits to the summer schedule, with the cancellations of the New Hampshire Open and Massachusetts Open. Neither will be rescheduled.
NHADA scholars: Lebanon’s Logan Falzarano and Mascoma’s Liam Hemmerling have been named winners of New Hampshire Athletic Directors Association scholarships.
Falzarano, a senior and one of two overall state winners, excelled at soccer and basketball with the Raiders; he’ll play the former at Johns Hopkins this autumn. Also a senior, Hemmerling participated in both sports with the Royals as well; he’ll attend Worcester (Mass.) Polytechnic University, majoring in mechanical engineering.
