A defenseman, Bayreuther recently completed his college hockey career at St. Lawrence, leading the Saints with 21 assist and 29 points in 30 games as a senior. Undrafted out of college, Bayreuther was free to sign with any NHL team he chose once he finished his college eligibility.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed by the Stars.
“Head coach Mark Morris and his staff at St. Lawrence University have done a tremendous job developing Gavin’s game,” Dallas general manager Jim Nill said in the release. “Gavin is a smart player with a great hockey sense who is able to create offense from the back end, and we look forward to him continuing his development at the professional level.”
Bayreuther showed a flair of rushing the puck during his four years at St. Lawrence. He finished with 35 goals, 76 assists and 111 points in 142 career games with the Saints, while this season’s totals ranked him third in the nation in points per game (0.97) among blueliners.
Bayreuther shared the ECAC rookie of the year award as a freshman. He earned first-team all-ECAC honors, a spot on the ECAC all-tournament team and second-team All-America recognition after his junior season.
According to a team release, Bayreuther’s entry-level contract with the NHL club will go into effect next season. For the time being, he’ll report to the team’s AHL Texas Stars affiliate, having signed an amateur tryout contract with them on Wednesday. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound defenseman was expected to join the team in time for two games in Cleveland this weekend.
