WOODSTOCK — Woodstock High starting pitcher Tom Bissaillon would not be denied in 6⅔ dominant innings to help the Wasps beat visiting Springfield, 9-0, in a Southern Vermont League baseball game on Tuesday afternoon.
Bissaillon struck out 15 against four walks and three hits surrendered. The senior wasn’t done there, going 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs for the Wasps (2-1).
Memphis Begin walked three times and came around to score a run each time. Jackson Martin added two hits, scored twice and drove in one. Chase Christiansen was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
Woodstock scored three runs in both the first and third innings to take a commanding early lead. The Wasps will visit Leland & Gray on Thursday.
THETFORD — Justin Robinson drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Panthers (2-1) a literal walk-off win.
Coach Phil Chaput praised the Thetford team defense led by Logan Brinkman. Ethan Marshia pitched the first 4⅓ innings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out six. Jacob Gilman then went 2⅔ innings with two strikeouts. Mack Briglin pitched the eighth and got the win.
Ryan Malloy and Jackson Kingsbury each went 1-for-3 for the Panthers. Thetford visits U-32 on Thursday.
BRANDON, Vt. — The Hurricanes improved to 3-0 with a road win over the Otters.
Jacob Dwinell helped set the table for the Hartford offense, going 2-for-5 with a stolen base and two runs scored. Colin Vielleux had two hits and drove in one run. Cam Tucker was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Tucker pitched the first three innings, allowing no hits while striking out three against three walks. Alex Bushway went the final four, allowing one unearned run and two hits while striking out eight.
Hartford visits Windsor on Thursday.
SOUTH ROYALTON — Carder Stratton threw the first three innings and was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored to help the Wildcats (4-0) top the Rebels.
Stratton struck out six and allowed just one hit. Curtis Barry went the other two innings, striking out four. Arliss Spaulding had a team-best three hits, including two doubles, and scored three runs.
Catcher Tyler Ballentine called a great game, according to WRV coach Devin Cilley, while also collecting a hit, one RBI and two runs scored. Dominic Craven had a hit and scored three runs. Jacob Barry had a RBI single and scored a run.
WRV visits Mill River on Thursday.
FAIR HAVEN, Vt. — The Slaters answered a four-run Windsor sixth inning with a three-run response and held on for the victory.
Ethan Belvin had three hits and drove in two runs to lead the Yellowjackets (1-1). Adam Dufour reached base with a pair of walks, and Dalton Clifford contributed two RBIs.
The Jacks host Hartford on Thursday.
BRADFORD, Vt. — Anastase Bourgeois tossed a no-hitter with 13 strikeouts as the Olympians (3-0) racked up another lopsided win.
Makenna Simmons and Hadlee Allen both accounted for two of the O’s eight hits as a team. Allen and Aspen Longmoore each slapped an inside-the-park home run. Meanwhile, Bourgeois only needed 72 pitches to catcher Simmons to craft the no-no.
“(They) set the tone from the start and put it in cruise control the rest of the way,” Oxbow coach Chuck Simmons said.
Oxbow hosts Thetford-Rivendell on Thursday.
SOUTH ROYALTON — Fiona Vaillancourt struck out 14 in a one-hitter for the Wildcats (4-0).
Vaillancourt helped her own cause with a triple, a walk and two runs scored. WRV broke things open in the fifth inning with six runs thanks to hits from Julia Morse, Toni Turner, Hannah White and Sadie Kinsley along with three walks and a pair of Green Mountain errors.
Chelsie Trask helped put WRV on the board in the second inning with a leadoff triple before scoring on a Morse single. The Wildcats will visit Mill River on Thursday.
THETFORD — The Panthers came up just short in a wild season opener against the Trojans.
Autumn Horniak pitched the first five innings for Thetford, striking out five. Becca Wells relieved and struck out two. Emma Colby and Crystal Parshley each had two hits for the Panthers. Eighth-grader Eiea Morgan started at catcher and had a good debut, according to coach Jesse Soulia.
“We have a large team this year, and it’s nice to see the team come together on and off the field. I’m looking forward to a productive season,” Soulia said.
Thetford-Rivendell visits Oxbow on Thursday.
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Hartford senior Zoe Pfeiffer added her name to another page of the program record book by surpassing Morgan Pero’s mark of 88 career goals.
Pfeiffer scored four times to reach 91 tallies in essentially two seasons for the Hurricanes (3-0). She broke the career standard for points last week.
Caroline Hamilton paced the Canes’ latest victory with five goals and an assist. Addison Cadwell, Chloe Jensen and Reilly Slusser had a pair of goals apiece. Sisters Sophie and Sarah Howe each scored once, as did Jasmine Jenkins and Abigail Gross. Hamilton also amassed a team-high nine draw controls. Sarah Howe and Ryelee Potwin marshaled the defense.
Hartford visits Stowe on Friday.
WEARE, N.H. — The Marauders (4-0) rolled to their fourth straight win and their third of the year by a double-digit margin. They visit Derryfield for the first of a home-and-home on Tuesday.
BRANDON, Vt. — The Wasps (4-0) continued their season-opening winning streak by topping the D-II Otters (1-2). Woodstock hosts Essex in an important D-I encounter on Friday.
JAFFREY, N.H. — Kaeley Skakalski and Keira Hines gave the Raiders (4-0) the match-deciding point at first doubles, the final point up for offer in a tight match with the Orioles (1-1).
The teams split the six singles points, with Skakalski (9-8) at No. 2, Ella Gessner at No. 5 and Sally Rainey at No. 6 prevailing for Lebanon. Gessner and Rainey also won third doubles, leaving Skakalski and Hines to post an 8-6 decision in their matchup to keep Lebanon perfect on the season.
The teams meet again on the CCBA courts on Thursday.
WOODSTOCK — The Ravens took advantage of unforced errors by the Wasps (1-1) and won four of the five singles points — two in tiebreakers — to hand the three-time defending VPA Division II state champs their first loss since 2017.
“It always comes to an end, but they played a tough team,” Woodstock coach Tom Hopewell said. “Learn from the loss, be positive about the process and get ready for the next. A lot of solid play, but unforced errors are the killer.”
No. 1 Hannah Watson claimed the Wasps’ sole singles point in a 6-4, 6-4 sweep of Olivia Shipley. Woodstock claimed both doubles matches through Chloe Masillo-Charlotte Nunan and Ava Dodson-Taylor Crompton.
