The value of independent thinking
Politics today is too often driven by party loyalty, rehearsed talking points, and financial interests, making true independent thinking increasingly rare.
That is why I support Susan Culp, an independent candidate representing Newbury, Topsham and Groton. Susan brings diligence, honesty, and intelligence to public service. She looks beyond party rhetoric, asks tough questions, and evaluates issues on their facts rather than taking information at face value.
I have seen her independent approach in action on issues that directly impact our communities. She challenged the Two Rivers-Ottauquechee Regional Commission’s land-use plan to protect local control and landowners. She was also instrumental in Newbury’s successful opposition to the state’s ill-conceived juvenile detention facility, a project the state ultimately abandoned due to effective local pushback. These critical local matters required rigorous research and challenge, not quiet acceptance.
Standing up to the political establishment without the backing of party machinery takes conviction and fearlessness. It is time to prioritize independent thinking over party loyalty and remind both parties that our votes belong to the people.
