Voters in Vermont House District Orange-2 will choose between Democrat Lance Mills of Fairlee and Republican Nicholas DiLorenzo of Bradford for one seat on Tuesday, Nov. 3. The seat is open because Rep. Monique Priestley, D/P-Bradford, is running for state Senate.
The Valley News asked the candidates in a survey about their experience, why they are running and what they see as the biggest issue facing the state. Mills’ answers, edited lightly for style, appear below.
Mills is a retired career and technical education teacher and a member of the Fairlee Selectboard. He names affordability as the biggest issue and says health care and education costs can come down without cutting either. DiLorenzo did not return the questionnaire.
LANCE MILLS

Democrat · VT House Orange-2
70, Democrat, Fairlee
Political experience: Fairlee Selectboard.
Professional experience: Retired teacher, River Bend Career and Technical Center.
Community service: Fairlee Cemetery Commission; Mentoring Project board member; Cub Scout leader; youth league coach.
Why are you running? I’m running for state representative because I want to help improve the lives of Vermonters. We need someone with experience in Montpelier working to lower the overall cost of living in Vermont.
Biggest issue: Affordability is the biggest issue facing Vermonters today. There are ways to lower healthcare costs and education costs without cutting healthcare or education. Part of that solution will lower property taxes as well. We need serious, experienced people working in Montpelier to lower costs.
