Vote to end the chaos in Congress

The news is full of stories of widespread harm to Americans from the policies of the Trump administration. Farmers are bankrupt because tariffs have denied them markets. Families lost healthcare to fund tax cuts for the very wealthiest. Young people cannot afford rent or homeownership because irresponsible federal debt has pushed up interest rates. Everyone is affected by sky-high gas and food prices, degraded environmental standards, monopolistic profits and corrupt deals which boost the cost of government.

Congress has had the power to block or reverse every single one of these irresponsible and unconstitutional acts. But Republicans in the Senate and House refused to exercise their authority over the budget, looked the other way when federal laws were violated, and approved incompetent, dishonest administrators. When forced to choose between doing the right thing and confronting the administration’s harmful actions, they recessed and fled Washington.

Voters in New Hampshire have a big role to play by making sure that Republicans no longer control the House and Senate after the coming election. The example of so-called centrist Sen. Susan Collins, of Maine, is instructive for our purple state. She ended up supporting a president who thinks he can do whatever he wants, voting for the Trump agenda 96% of the time and succumbing to the general climate of corruption in her dealings with a defense contractor.

John Sununu, the Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate, is not aligned with the MAGA faction of the Republican Party. But he will be subjected to the same pressures and temptations that shredded Collins’ reputation for moderation. Lily Tang Williams, the Republican nominee for the House, is committed to MAGA, although now tries to hide it. If they achieve narrow victories this fall, the chaos and lawlessness that has characterized GOP rule will likely continue. You cannot let that happen if you care about our state and nation. Vote for Chris Pappas and Maggie Goodlander on Nov. 3, whatever your usual feelings about Democrats!
