Jane Welsh

Hanover, NH – M. Jane Welsh, 80, of Hanover, NH, died peacefully on September 20, 2026, at the Jack Byrne Center in Lebanon of complications related to dementia.

Jane was born and raised in Taylorville, Illinois, middle daughter of Howard and Helen (Kwedar) Welsh. Her education in the local schools was supplemented by annual family road trips throughout the USA, Canada, Mexico, and Central America. In 1967 she graduated from Washington University in St Louis. She then worked in the WU Medical School laboratories before moving to New York City, where she managed a busy medical office with multiple physicians until her retirement. Living in Manhattan offered opportunities for connecting deeply with people while enjoying the many cultural offerings of the City, especially opera and ballet. Whenever the opportunity arose, she availed herself of travel with friends or family, touring the Caribbean, Ireland, the UK, Italy, Hungary, Russia, and Scandinavia. Always an avid student, she moved to Hanover in 1995 to enroll in the Dartmouth College Master of Liberal Studies program in which she excelled. Afterward, she joined the MALS Alumni Council and wrote graduate alumni notes for the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine. As a permanent resident of the Upper Valley, she became very involved in her new community, made many lasting friendships, and participated in the Montshire Museum Magic Carpet luncheon series, International Women’s Club: book club, cooking committee, mahjong, and the IWC board. She continued to pursue her long-held interests in all things dog related, reading, knitting, music and cooking for friends – especially her annual Christmas dinner preparations in Chevy Chase, a tradition shared over the decades with her long-time friend Mary Ellen.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents and her elder sister Anne Welsh. She is survived by her sister Vicki Welsh of San Leandro, California, many cousins, and dear friends Maggie & Bill Montgomery and neighbor Alison of Hanover, NH, and Natalie Richstone of Queens, NY.

Private interment of ashes will be in Illinois.
