Hanover’s Ben Groves won the 5,000-meter race in a time of 15:44, and teammate Isaac McNaughton placed second to lead the Bears to first place at the Nashua North Cross Country Invitational meet on Saturday. Hanover’s Dylan Faris was sixth, Teddy White 12th, and Rohan Novosad 29th in the field of 174 runners from 11 schools at the Nashua High School course. The girls also won the meet in a tiebreaker over Hopkinton.

“Ben, Isaac and Dylan settled in up front and felt out the fastest racers other teams had to offer,” Hanover coach Eric Picconi said in an email about the boys top three finishers. “Teddy and Rohan had to work in a few packs behind to get the math right for the squad, with Miles (Molina 71st) and Max (Brown 78th) rounding out the top 7.”

The Bears’ Aria Deeb was second in the race with 122 runners with teammates Ari Hirschler 11th, Grace Stewart 14th, freshman Edith Rojansky 16th, and Madelyn Berk 34th.

Picconi called the girls race “suspenseful” and the Bears had to work to overcome a Hopkinton squad that led early.

“Aria was controlled up front, and Ari and Grace found their space and held firm,” Picconi said. “Edie had a terrific varsity debut with teammates close behind. It came down to a classic tie-breaker by Hannah Eck (43rd) to earn the 1st place plaque.”

The Bears will next run at the Manchester Invitational on Saturday.

Mascoma’s Russell wins Eagles Nest Invitational

With a time of 17:24, Mascoma’s Carl Russell placed first among 67 runners at the Eagles Nest Invitational at Portsmouth Christian Academy in Dover, N.H., on Saturday.

“Carl Russell ran possibly the most dominant race of his high school career today, winning comfortably and missing the course record by .05 seconds,” Royals coach Rick Currier said in an email. “Ransom Donigian (seventh) and Karson Rogers (eighth) both secured top-10 finishes again and continued great starts to their season as well.”

The Mascoma girls were led by freshman Paige Reney, who finished fifth in the field of 45. Windsor’s Olivia Dube was third and teammate Isabella Ciccarelli was 14th.

“Paige Reney continued her impressive run for us and our girls on a whole went toe to toe with all the other teams today, without our number two runner today,” Currier said. “Freshmen Grace King (21st), Maddy Song (23rd) and Nobelee Cappetta (31st) really stepped up today as well.” Isabella Currier was 22nd for the Royals.
