I don’t need a cellphone!

I was delighted by Victoria Wolf’s recent commentary on the editorial page about the man who lives without a cell phone. Like Adrian, the man described, I do not have or want a cell phone. Yes, I bring a book to read while waiting instead of playing Candy Crush or reading blogs. I do not want to read email while walking my dog or sharing dinner with my wife.

And I tell friends that since I was able to make my way across the Sahara with just a Michelin map, I can certainly find their house in Tunbridge or Charlestown — even if I end up taking a wrong turn and asking a stranger for directions.

Like Adrian in the article, I enjoy meeting and talking to strangers while waiting in line or for a friend who is delayed. And perhaps I take it one step further: each time I am out and about, I try to make at least three strangers smile. It’s easy. People are very receptive here in the Upper Valley to receiving a compliment or sharing a thought with a stranger.

In this day of cell phones, I guess many are surprised to meet someone who takes a moment to talk with them.
