In defense of not voting
I no longer vote. Here is why: we live in a post-ideological age, but we are blind to it. We can’t see that there is no longer left and tight, liberal and conservative, traditional and progressive. There is only “the little guy” and a world stacked against him (her, them). This dynamic transcends ideology.
I am just as likely to throw my support behind the trans individual whose rights and freedoms are being trampled as I am the gun-toting, Trump-loving farmer who is being is beaten down by corporate greed and unsustainable costs. Ideology is a ruse, a sham.
The reality is far simpler: the only issue that matters is “the little guy” and their struggle to survive and thrive. So I no longer vote, because I am only faced with choices that adhere to the illusion of ideology. Truth is, there is only one issue left in the USA, and that’s the struggle of “the little guy” against the seemingly insurmountable power of “the man.”
Until we recognize this truth, I will continue to sit on the political sidelines and instead do my best to help those around me, regardless of who they are and what they believe.
