Hanover middle school teacher named New Hampshire history teacher of the year
HANOVER — The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History has selected Frances C. Richmond Middle School social studies teacher Derek Butler as its New Hampshire history teacher of the year.
The New York-based nonprofit organization that supports American history programs selects educators from each state, according to a news release from the Hanover School District. Those chosen have shown a deep commitment to history education.
“Mr. Butler brings history and civics to life by creating meaningful learning experiences that inspire curiosity, encourage thoughtful discussion, and help students make connections between the past and the present,” SAU 70 Superintendent Robin Steiner said in the release. “Through dedication, creativity, and a genuine passion for education, he has made a lasting impact on students, colleagues, and our entire school community.”

Nicholas Slaughter, of Hanover, earned a master’s degree in mathematics education from Boston University this spring.

Karsten Hansen, of Sunapee, will serve as Deputy Brigade Commander for the class of 2027’s Corps of Cadets at the U. S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.
Aubree Herzog, of Claremont, and Matthew Brock, of Etna, made the dean’s list at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., for the spring 2026 semester.
Finch Shepherd, of Norwich, made the dean’s list at Simmons University in Boston for the spring 2026 semester.
The following Upper Valley residents made the dean’s list at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., for the spring 2026 semester: Anna Krysia Aaron, Hanover, environmental science; and Addison Thurston Cadwell, Strafford, biology.
