The deer episode
I remember the Hanover Street School deer event, too. It was 1974 or 1975, our oldest daughter was in 3rd grade, perhaps 4th, it’s been a long time, and at that time it was 3rd through 6th.
She came home that day, sad and shaken that this poor deer had crashed through a classroom window.
Then she sat down and wrote a story about the event. One of her teachers submitted it to a magazine that published student writing, called Stone Soup. It was published not too long after.
I talked to her the other day about it, and she hasn’t forgotten any of it. I bought 4 copies of the Stone Soup edition with her story, one for her, one for each set of grandparents and one for her Father and me. She still has hers packed away, I’m sure I have our copy, tucked away with photos of her as she grew up.
It was interesting to go back 50 years to remember her school years. Her oldest child is about to graduate from high school she’s lived in California since the early 2000’s.
