The Sunapee Eight
As Sunapee graduation approached I sat down to read and select a student/s to receive a modest yearly scholarship given in my beloved son’s name who died of unseen wounds from the Iraq war. This year there were eight students who applied and I came to view them as “The Sunapee Eight.” All eight applications were outstanding in grades, sports involvement, community participation, hard work and deserving of the full scholarship. In addition their choices of higher education were well thought out regarding schools that would not put them in decades of enormous college dept. Their college fields of choice were engineering (3), medical, zoology, health science, biology and radiology. Each student wrote passionately about their chosen fields of study and a deep desire to help humanity and our planet. The Sunapee Eight are a grand tribute of good parenting and to the outstanding and dedicated teachers in Sunpee”s public schools and public education in general which is the backbone of societal advancement. I applaud the Sunapee Eight and thank them for reminding me that there are students like them all across our grand country who will uphold our democracy and strive for equality and a better life for all people and our planet.
