Two men incarcerated in Vermont have died in separate hospitals since Friday.

On March 27, Jose Luis Gonzalez, 51, of Connecticut, died at UVM Medical Center, according to the Vermont Department of Corrections. And two days later, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Jonathan Stone, 37, of St. Johnsbury, Vt., died.

Both men had required hospitalization in the weeks leading up to their death, according to the Corrections Department and Vermont State Police. Per protocol, state police and the Defender Generalโ€™s Office will investigate the deaths, as will the corrections departmentโ€™s investigative unit.

The Corrections Department said neither death appeared suspicious.

In 2025, nine people died in Department of Correctionsโ€™ custody, according to state data. At least four have died so far in 2026, according to the departmentโ€™s press releases.

Stone, who had been incarcerated since 2019, was hospitalized about two weeks before his death and brought to North Country Hospital in Newport, Vt., according to a department press release. He was later transferred to Dartmouth Hitchcock.

Gonzalez, who was detained while awaiting trial, was incarcerated at Marble Valley Regional Correctional Facility in Rutland before being hospitalized at Rutland Regional Medical Center in late February, according to state police. He was soon transferred to UVM Medical Center, where he died more than three weeks later.
