Scorned allies ignore Trump
President Trump is now complaining about, whining about, and threatening our allies for not supporting our efforts to open the Straits of Hormuz. Is this a surprise? He has been denigrating and threatening our allies since his return to the Oval Office. These are the same allies who, since 1945, helped keep the peace and create a somewhat stable world order during the fraught years of the Cold War with the Communist bloc and helped enforce an international code that kept everyone’s fingers off of the nuclear launch buttons. Was this alliance perfect in all details? No. Were the burdens of the alliance shared equitably? Of course not. The military and economic power of the US was far beyond those of our Allies for us to not carry a disproportionate weight of leadership.
With his steady drumbeat of “We don’t need allies,” his threats toward our allies, and his renewed assertion that “We don’t need NATO,” President Trump has done so much to distance the US from our friends in the world, who are now reluctant to come to the US’ aid in opening the Straits of Hormuz.
