WEST LEBANON — The man alleged to have stolen about $1,000 from a Girl Scout cookie sales table near the entrance to the Walmart on Route 12A last month is in custody, according to police.
The suspect, William Bohan, a 33-year-old Fairlee resident, is incarcerated at Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield, Vt., and currently has an active warrant for arrest in New Hampshire “for charges related to the theft,” Lebanon Police Chief Phillip Roberts confirmed in an email this week.
“Upon notification of (Bohan’s) release in (Vermont) we will make attempts to get him processed on the warrant here in New Hampshire,” Roberts said in his email.
Court records show that Bohan is in custody after violating multiple conditions of probation stemming from his conviction on multiple felony burglary charges from 2022 in Bradford, Vt.
The terms of his probation, according to a document filed in Orange Superior Court on Feb. 26 — the day after the West Lebanon theft, included not being convicted of another crime or engaging in criminal behavior, and not purchasing, possessing or using regulated drugs.
Bohan’s next court date is a violation of probation status conference in Orange Superior Court in Chelsea on April 22 at 11 a.m.
Neither Defense Attorney Daniel Sedon nor Orange County State’s Attorney Colin Seaman were immediately available for comment on Friday.
Police allege the West Lebanon theft occurred in the afternoon of Feb. 25 when Bohan allegedly grabbed the metal cashbox from the Girl Scouts’ table and fled on foot toward a wooded area behind the plaza.
The six-girl troop was raising funds for a June trip to Europe which is estimated to cost around $30,000, the Valley News previously reported.
The cashbox was later recovered in the woods but the money was not inside, Lebanon Police said Feb. 26.
Police identified Bohan based on information received from the community, along with subsequent investigative efforts.
Efforts to reach Roberts by phone for additional details were not successful on Friday.
Ginger Kozlowski, a spokeswoman for the Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains, said that the stolen $1,000, which amounts to roughly 166 boxes of cookies, has not been returned to the troop.
But, in the wake of the theft, Concord-based troop 20368 of Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains received $1,400 in donations, Kozlowski said in a phone interview on Friday.
The Lebanon Walmart also donated $400 to the troop, Kozlowski said.
“The corporate Walmart, not just the local Walmart, has decided to donate $5,000 to our council for our cookie program,” she added.
Efforts to reach Walmart Inc. media relations were not successful by deadline.
CEO Patricia Mellor is scheduled to accept the check on behalf of Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains in a ceremony scheduled for Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at the Lebanon Walmart where the incident occurred, Kozlowski said.
