We must all bear witness
I got a good dose of history in school. We learned about the Brownshirts in Germany — thugs who beat and murdered their opponents. We learned about Goebbels’ propaganda machine, the Gestapo and S.S., concentration camps and the Holocaust. (Forgotten fact: Hitler never got a majority vote; 37% was his best showing.) We thought it couldn’t happen here… we’re a country of law and order protected by our Constitution and our democratic traditions!
Does it feel like that now? Today, Trump believes himself to be The Law, saying the only thing that stops him is his own morality. Is that comforting? You have to forget his playboy buddy, the way he disrespects most women, his conviction for sexual assault, his mocking of people with disabilities, his felony convictions for falsifying business records, and his never-ending badmouthing of anyone who doesn’t adore him. All normal and acceptable, right? Your spouse, parents, brother, and brother-in-law all behave this way! Trump’s a moral and upright man; it’s only those crazy vicious liberals who say otherwise.
The killing of Renee Good makes it clear what direction we’re headed. Trump supporters say she got what she deserved. Really? This Christian mom whose last words were, “That’s fine, dude, I’m not mad at you”? She deserves to die? Is that the country we live in?
For years we’ve been advised, “If you see something, say something.” The time to say “Enough!” is now. We have a duty to the American ideals we honor, to the America we love, and to the America we still want to be. Our country needs us right now.
You’ve seen something, say something.
