Sarasota, FL – Charles Jerome McCarthy
August 7, 1937 – November 25, 2025
Charlie McCarthy was born on August 7, 1937, in Springfield, Massachusetts, the son of the late Charles J. McCarthy and Mary Moynihan McCarthy. He passed away surrounded by the love of his family.
Charlie leaves behind his beloved wife of 52 years, Judith (Judy). He was the proud father of Sharon McCarthy Doyle (Alan) of Sarasota, FL; Susan McCarthy Henneberry (Gary) of Avon, CT; and Steven Marsden (Jamie McKenzie) of Essex, CT. He was predeceased by his son, Richard Marsden.
He cherished his nine grandchildren: Cathleen Doyle Massey (Jared Hollenbeck) of Lakeville, MA; Collin Doyle (Stephanie) of Seattle, WA; Molly Henneberry (Ian Rabbitt) of Wolcott, CT; Haley Henneberry (Michael Waller) of Worcester, MA; Joseph Henneberry of Farmington, CT; Jenny Henneberry Malcomson (Jacob) of Avon, CT; Charlotte Marsden of Brooklyn, NY; James Marsden of Ivoryton, CT and Delny Marsden of Ivoryton, CT.
He was also blessed with five great-grandchildren: Ryan and Charlotte (Charlie) Massey, Briana and Aidan Doyle, and Tai Waller.
Charlie is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Denis and Linda McCarthy of Naples, FL; as well as sisters and brothers-in-law Jeanette Spratt, Diane Carlson, Ronald Wilmot, Linette Powell, Charles Wilmot, Mark Wilmot, Yvette Wilmot (Jack Rua) and Paul Wilmot (Sylvie). He was predeceased by his sisters and brothers-in-law, Joan and Dennis Davis, and Kathleen and Tony Clark. He leaves behind dear friends Susan and Donny Martin of NH, as well as many nieces and nephews across the United States and Ireland, all of whom felt the lasting impact of his kindness, humor, and presence.
Charlie lived and worked most of his life in West Hartford, CT. A graduate of Hall High School, he attended UCONN and proudly played in the Our Lady of Sorrows Fife and Drum Corps for many years. He began working for the Town of West Hartford at the age of 18 in the Police Department garage and retired in 1992 as the Supervisor of Inspections.
A man who loved the outdoors, Charlie embraced retirement in “his” woods-first in Granby, CT, then in Grantham, NH, and later in Lebanon, NH. He always made time for family and friends, offering a thoughtful ear, steady advice, a story or a joke. He adored Irish and marching band music, often marching along while driving with the music turned up-a memory that will bring many a smile.
Charlie, our Irish leprechaun with the twinkle in his eye, and quick wit will be deeply missed.
Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life to be held on Saturday, May 9th, at the Town of West Hartford Conference Center, 50 South Main Street, West Hartford, CT, from 2:00–4:00 PM.
