HARTLAND — A Massachusetts man escaped serious injury on Saturday after the box truck he was driving crashed through a guardrail on Interstate 91 and plunged off a bridge into the Ottauquechee River, Vermont State Police said in a news release.

Troopers were called to the northbound lanes near mile marker 66.4 at about 7:03 a.m. Police said James Sseggwanyi, 44, of Chelmsford, Mass., lost control of a 2020 Isuzu box truck, struck the left-side guardrail and went off the roadway before landing in the river.

Sseggwanyi reported only minor injuries and was not taken to a hospital, according to police. The truck was totaled.

The Hartland Fire Department, Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles, Agency of Transportation, Vermont Fish and Wildlife, Sabil and Sons Towing and Vermont State HAZMAT assisted at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
