It was distressing to read of the proximity of Aroma Joe’s, the latest drive through, as only a “3 minute drive” from Lebanon High School. There are multiple medical studies of the negative effects of energy drinks on the bodies and minds of youth. These can include irregular heart beats, elevated blood pressure, poor sleep and increased anxiety to name just a few. This was a blatant disregard of the health of our children by Aroma Joe’s meant to capitalize on the vulnerability of youth with the placement of their business so close to the high school. Unfortunately this is another public health disaster that the community will need to compensate for the fallout. As a public health advocate and physician I would encourage parents to discuss the use of energy drinks by their teenagers who show the most vulnerability to the negative effects of such products. If for no other reason than to raise their awareness and make them informed consumers regarding the potential harm to their developing minds and bodies.
