Here’s the final tally of Hartford’s October Styrofoam/expanded polystyrene recycling collection: 287 cars from 29 towns dropped off 2,000 pounds of #6 foam. That filled two and a half 26-foot U-Haul trucks and two 30-cubic-yard Casella containers–diverting a HUGE volume from landfills. Participants donated $1,417, which will be used to support the transportation costs of the fall 2026 collection. The foam was transported to the Gilford, N.H., Recycling Center, where it was processed to be turned into insulation boards for buildings.
The Hartford Climate Action Steering Team extends a special thank you to the 32 volunteers who made the collection run smoothly and to these organizations that generously provided financial and in-kind support: Mascoma Bank, Casella Waste Systems, the New England Grassroots Environmental Fund, the CARE2 Fund at USLI, and the White River Rotary Club.
