SUNAPEE โ€” Testing ordered by the town of Sunapee revealed E. coli has been found in Lake Sunapee at the site of a sewage spill off Jobs Creek.

The town tested the water again Friday, Town Manager Shannon Martinez said in a phone interview. It will continue to test the affected area and monitor E. coli levels until they return to normal.

“The incident is localized to the property where the spill occurred, and testing is focused on the immediate area,” town officials wrote in a Friday announcement posted to the town website.

The residence where the spill occurred is connected to the town’s water and sewer system, Martinez said. A valve broke, allowing sewage to spill into the lake. Staff with the town’s water and sewer department disconnected the valve.

โ€œWe know for sure thereโ€™s nothing else going into the water,โ€ Martinez said in a Friday morning phone interview.

The town’s water supply has not been affected by the spill and it remains safe. Cleanup of the area is ongoing. People and animals are still being advised to avoid the part of the lake affected by the spill.
