I was amazed to learn that bipartisan support for banning plastic bags has been stalled in New Hampshire (“Plastic bag ban stalls on party lines”; Oct. 30). I was also amazed that the reporter did not mention that generally plastic bags that are stretchable plastic cost money to recycle.
For the past three year residents at Kendal at Hanover have been reducing their trash load by 20 to 40 pounds per week by collecting stretchable plastic bags for the Trex Project. These bags are compacted into 500 pound blocks at the Lebanon Landfill and when they have collected a truckload the Trex company in Upstate New York comes to add them to their process of making decking and outdoor furniture.
Of course, our system is staffed by volunteers, but if individuals don’t step up to help save our planet, no one else will. Before long there won’t be a planet to live on.
