When my Uncle George was in his 80s, he suffered from dementia. One day, Aunt Mary found him dismantling the garage. When she asked him what he was doing, he said that he was tearing down the garage to make way for a playhouse for the kids. After calmly talking with George, Mary was able to convince him that they needed the garage and that the kids no longer wanted a playhouse. The fact was that the kids were now well into their 50s and even the grandkids were into their 20s. Aunt Mary, like all good caregivers, knew how to keep Uncle George safe and out of trouble. It’s too bad Aunt Mary wasn’t around to save the East Wing of the White House.
