Earl Farnham Strout

Lyme, NH – Earl F. Strout, 92, died on October 13, 2025 after a short hospital stay, resulting from a fall, surrounded by his three daughters and son-in-law.

Earl was born in Portland, Maine on March 21, 1933, son of Arthur Everett Strout and Gertrude (Marion) Farnham Strout. He spent his grade and high school years in Portland, then received his BA in Economics from Bowdoin College, Brunswick, ME, in 1955.

Following college, Earl served in the Army Transportation Corps as a 1st LT. He then was employed by W.T. Grant Co. managing stores in many New England locations, the last being in West Lebanon, NH.

During his employment with Grants, in St, Johnsbury, VT, he met the love of his life, Beverly Ruth Kidder from Amherst, MA. They were married in 1958.

(Beverly passed away, January, 2018).

Shortly after moving to Lyme, NH, Grants closed, and Earl and Beverly (Rusty) purchased Green Mountain Studios. They operated the company until 2005, then pursued their many hobbies. Earl had a passion for working with wood, making furniture, and turning bowls.

Earl and family spent a greater part of their summers at their cottage in Alfred Maine. The land in Maine has been in the family since 1790. This was the place that Earl spent his summers as a youth, so it was his “other home”.

Earl was active in many local activities including: Trustee for Lebanon College for six years, Selectman for the town of Lyme, NH, Lyme fire department, Lyme fast squad, and many Lyme committees. Bev and Earl re-established The Lyme Town Band. Earl served on numerous committees for the Lyme congregational Church. Earl and Beverly were named Lyme Citizens of the Year in 2014.

Earl is survived by his daughters, Tracy Flickinger (husband Dan Kelley) of Kennebunk, Maine, Karen Lewis (husband Win) of Winona, MN, and Robin Cushman (husband Lyn) of Orford, NH, eight grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his wife Beverly (2018) and brother, Everett, of Maine.

A town Celebration of Life will be planned at some time in the future.
