I was intrigued to learn that the Republican Party is asking for donations in support of an effort to impeach Karen Liot Hill, the only Democrat on New Hampshire’s Executive Council. The charge is that she used her council email to put one of her constituents in contact with a law firm that Karen believed might be able to help that constituent.

Normally, helping a constituent would be considered the duty of an elected official, but in this case that constituent believes that the recently enacted bill SB287 is part of an effort to suppress voting. Whether one favors the new rules imposed by SB287 or not, it is the right of every citizen to challenge the legality of our laws.

So why does the Republican Party want to impeach Karen? Her vote doesn’t really matter in advancing the Republican agenda because she is the only Democrat on the five-person Executive Council. Further, because her district has been so dramatically gerrymandered, her successor would undoubtedly again be a Democrat.

I have to believe that the impeachment isn’t about ethics or misconduct. Instead, I can only imagine that the Republican Party wants to discredit one more political opponent and lacks another message popular enough to attract donations.
