While reading the review of Northern Stage’s production of “Come From Away”, I was saddened to read that the next generation, or maybe its two generations removed from me, cannot enjoy a production that doesn’t have conflict at its base.

It is hard enough to carry on in today’s world without our having to witness transgressions every day. Isn’t it enough to be able to see a wonderful play that is educating those who didn’t know the story, as well as showing us that there are still warm heartfelt moments in life?

The story also reminds people that it doesn’t take much to make a difference. Showing the anguish on the pilot’s face as she learns of her cohorts deaths is very moving and heartbreaking.

Evidently, these moments don’t qualify as “conflict’ or add to the depth of the show. It’s too bad that some feel the need to fabricate a conflict to sell a product when there is plenty of conflict in everyday life. Illustrating a basic story of human compassion is a valid art form. Hopefully it can also teach compassion.

This play also serves as a reminder of how loyal our neighbors to the North of us have been over the years and how both countries have helped each other. (The explosion in Nova Scotia during WWI when the US sent aid and doctors comes to mind).

I only hope that the headline doesn’t deter many from seeing what is an excellent, poignant and educational production. Thank you Northern Stage for continuing to provide excellent shows for the Upper Valley to enjoy.
