Hanover sets the pace at Thetford meet

Hanover’s Ben Groves won the 5,000-meter Southern Vermont League cross country race at Thetford Academy on Tuesday with a time of 17 minutes and 10 seconds, leading the Bears to a first-place finish among 11 teams.

The Bears’ Megan Faris was second in the girls’ race with teammate Aria Deeb third as the girls took seven of the first 15 finishes on their way to winning the meet. Hanover’s Grace Stewart finished fifth, and teammate Millie Larrick was sixth.

The Hanover boys placed eight runners in the top 15, with Alexander Collins fifth and Isaac McNaughton sixth. Other finishes included Ollie Emery, Thetford, 7th, George Roda, White River Valley, 8th, and Peter Horan, Thetford, 10th. Hartford’s top finish for the boys was Elliot Brooks, 21st, and Zach Peterman of Woodstock Union was 34th in the field of 94 runners.

In the girls race, won by Sydney Remenar of Burr and Burton (20:12) with 67 runners, Mary Sluka of Woodstock was 9th, Sylvia Johnson, Hartford, 11th, and Anya Young, White River Valley, 17th.

Results: Hanover 33, Burr and Burton 55, Thetford 77, Brattleboro 82, Hartford 117, Woodstock 179.

Girls: Hanover 21, Burr and Burton 45, Woodstock 94, Hartford 99, Thetford 126
