Sens. Maggie Hassan and Eric Schmitt have introduced the Graham Hoffman Act, a bipartisan bill that makes assaulting first responders a federal crime. The bill is named after Graham Hoffman, a paramedic who was tragically killed in the line of duty, and this initiative sends a clear message: attacks on those who serve will not be tolerated.
The Graham Hoffman Act is designed to address areas not covered by state laws, enabling the federal government to bring charges against individuals who assault first responders in specific situations where federal jurisdiction applies. Those who commit violent acts against paramedics, firefighters, EMTs, and other emergency personnel would be held fully accountable.
Every day, first responders in New Hampshire and across the country put their lives on the line to protect and serve communities. They show up in our darkest moments—a fire, a medical emergency, or a crisis—and they deserve to know that they will be protected from assault.
Sen. Hassan’s bipartisan effort honors the heroes in public service by implementing stronger protections and tougher consequences for anyone who tries to harm them. It also honors the memory of Graham Hoffman and the countless others who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities.
