HARTLAND — A 19-year-old man was transported to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center after the tractor he was operating veered off the roadway and down a steep embankment in Hartland on Monday afternoon.

Joseph “Joey” Ferris, of Braintree, Vt., was operating a John Deere Feed Chopper south on Route 5 when he “lost control of the vehicle while attempting to maneuver around a curved portion of the roadway.” The tractor went down the embankment before “landing” near Lulls Brook, according to a news release from Vermont State Police.

In addition to state troopers, Hartland and Windsor Fire & EMS crews responded to the scene. The tractor was located down the embankment and the Hartford Fire Department’s Rope team assisted in rendering aid to Ferris.

The tractor was totaled and Ferris sustained moderate to serious injuries during the crash, police said.
