NEWPORT — Residents approved a $22.15 million school operating budget during Australian ballot voting on the Newport School District warrant on Tuesday.

The vote was 424 to 113.

They also approved two collective bargaining agreements: one with the Newport Teachers Association by a vote of 397 to 143, and another with the Newport Support Staff by 411 to 131.

Jessica Packard and Keith Sayer were elected to three-year terms on the School Board, defeating candidate Bert Spaulding Sr. 

Nikki Murphy, who ran uncontested, was elected to a one-year term on the board.

Voters also approved an article that urges state elected officials “to fulfill the State’s responsibility of providing an adequate education fairly funded for every student across the state” by increasing funding for public education by a vote of 481 to 6.
