WEST CANAAN — The Mascoma High football team’s motto is “Never Out of the Fight”, but the Royals absorbed a pounding Saturday during a 41-0 loss to Newport in the NHIAA Division IV teams’ season opener.

Running back Kyle Ashley, 6 foot 2 and more than 200 pounds, rumbled for five touchdowns and more than 100 yards for the Tigers, who led, 33-0, at halftime. Most of the second half was played with a running clock and the Royals managed only a handful of first downs.

“Kyle is a beast,” said Newport coach John Proper, whose team reached last season’s division championship. “He’s one of the top players in the state. We’re going to get the ball in his hands as often and in as many ways as possible.”

Proper said Ashley, a senior who’s being pursued by colleges for his track and field prowess in the discus and javelin, will still play quarterback at times for Newport.

“He’s a gym rat who’s always in the weight room,” Proper said of Ashley. “His physical attributes and a motor that never stops make him an animal.”

Mascoma coach John Daley said his team wasn’t conditioned to keep up with the visitors during an afternoon with temperatures in the low 80s. The Royals, consistently routed by Newport in recent years, were offsides on numerous plays.

“We got blessed with a cool, rainy preseason and we’re not used to playing four quarters in the heat yet,” Daley said. “This week, our focus is going to be conditioning. We executed our plays, but we had no gas in the tank to finish them.”

Newport, which also received a 36-yard touchdown run from quarterback Aaron Fellows, hosts Winnisquam next. Mascoma visits defending division champion Somersworth.
