WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — The Hartford High football team struck offensively for four touchdowns in the first half before lightning in the area forced an early end at halftime with the Hurricanes in front of Bellows Falls, 27-7, on Thursday night.
This early-season matchup between the D-I Canes and the perennial D-II power Terriers provided a nice throwback to the old Connecticut Valley League matchups of a generation ago.
Bellows Falls took the opening kickoff and mounted a touchdown drive to take an early 7-0 lead. Terriers quarterback Eli Allbee capped the opening march with a touchdown run from 11 yards out on fourth down and 2.
It was all Hurricanes after that opening score, starting with Canes QB Brayden Trombly scoring on a 41-yard touchdown run to even the contest. Trombly later found Austin St. Peter for a 58-yard catch and run for points. Ezra Mock scored from six yards out just before halftime to give Hartford a 27-7 lead.
The Canes (2-0) will host BFA-St. Albans on Friday night.
Boys Soccer Mascoma 3, Berlin 2
WEST CANAAN — The Royals improved to 3-1 on the season with a comeback win over the Mountaineers.
Brayden Pierce scored the only goal of the first half for Mascoma, with an assist from Tanner Moulton. Berlin then scored the first two goals of the second half to take a 2-1 lead.
Pierce netted his second of the game for equalizer, scoring this time with an assist to Aidan Smith. Moulton scored the game-winner off a great feed from Logan Isham.
Keeper Matt Favreau had six saves for Mascoma, which visits Falls Mountain on Tuesday.
Field Hockey Mascoma 5, Mascenic 0
WEST CANAAN — Freshman Aaliyah Muzzey scored two goals to help the Royals to a shutout win at home.
Freshman Bryanna Thurston started the action for Mascoma with a first-quarter goal, her fourth of the young season. Muzzey added the next, giving the Royals a 3-0 lead at halftime. Ann Buffington and Makenna Houston each scored after the break.
Mascoma is riding a three-game winning streak, all against Division III opposition after a season-opening loss at D-II Hanover.
Coach Danielle Pushee credited the play of Ellie McGrody defensively and in the midfield as a key to the win.
The Royals (3-1) will host White Mountains on Wednesday.
