Following a blowout win over Yale and a shootout victory against Brown, the Dartmouth College men’s hockey team squandered that momentum, dropping both ends of a two-game trip to the New York Capital District.

Friday night, the Big Green (1-4-1, 1-3-1 ECAC Hockey) dropped a 4-1 decision to Union in Schenectady, though that score is deceiving as the Dutchmen scored two late empty-net goals. Union dominated the first period, but 6-foot-8-inch freshman goaltender Cooper Black kept the game scoreless. Dartmouth struck first in the second period as sophomore Sean Chisholm scored his first goal of the year, assisted by sophomore Ian Pierce and senior Tanner Palocsik.

“(Black) is still learning the college game,” Big Green coach Reid Cashman said. “The sky’s the limit for Cooper Black with that size and athleticism, and he’s an ultra-competitive kid.”

The Dutchmen evened the score later in the second period as Mason Snell finally snuck one past Black, and Ben Tupker’s third-period goal turned out to be the game-winner.

The following evening, Dartmouth took on Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy for the first time since falling to the Engineers in the first round of last year’s ECAC Tournament. Again, the Big Green scored first in the second period, this time on freshman Luke Haymes’s team-leading fifth goal of the year. Freshman Tucker McRae and senior Tyler Campbell had the assists.

RPI struck back late in the second on a goal by Ryan Mahshie, and John Beaton’s goal with just 28 seconds left in the third gave the Engineers a 2-1 win. Black made 25 saves.

Dartmouth has the coming week off, then will head to Belfast, Northern Ireland to participate in the Friendship Four. The Big Green will play Quinnipiac on Nov. 25 and either UMass-Amherst or UMass-Lowell on Nov. 26.

“It’s great for our program, great for our student-athletes,” Cashman said. “It’ll be an unbelievable challenge (and) a great learning experience.”

The defending champions will take on Harvard in Saturday’s title game at 4:30 at Burnham Field, home to the Big Green’s soccer teams. Dartmouth rugby plays its home matches at nearby Brophy Field, but needed the larger venue and lights to host the championships. Goalposts will, of course, be added to the soccer facility.

The following night, the Big Green got into the win column against Division III foe Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, 107-52. Dartmouth emptied the bench with 13 players scoring, led by 18 points from junior guard Robert McRae III.
