HANOVER — The Hanover Planning Board will begin its review tonight of Dartmouth College’s revised project to build a 397-bed undergraduate housing complex on Lyme Road north of downtown Hanover, nine months after the college put its original plan on hold.

Dartmouth College is proposing to build a three-building residential complex to house approximately 400 undergraduate students on property owned by the Hanover Country Club on Lyme Road. The plan includes a three-story residential hall, a four-story residential building and the future construction of a 3,700-square-foot pavilion for student programs.

The plan will also provide 26,000 square feet of common space separating the buildings, designed like “outdoor living rooms” to allow for scheduled events and for social interaction “in a friendly parklike setting,” according to a project narrative written by Ed Lewis, assistant director of Dartmouth College Housing Renewal.

Dartmouth’s original plan, first proposed in October 2021, was to construct the project on the opposite side of Lyme Road from the country club, on property currently occupied by the Garipay Field recreation area, a popular recreation spot for both the college and the community on the east side of Lyme Road. The college paused the plan in February following criticism from residents, faculty and students about loss of the recreation area.

The Planning Board meeting to discuss the application will take place tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Hanover Town Hall. People may participate in person or remotely through Zoom.
