HYDE PARK, Vt. — Search crews retrieved the body of a person they believe to be a missing New Yorker from Green River Reservoir in Hyde Park on Thursday morning, according to a Vermont State Police news release.
The person believed to be Joshua Hwang, 22, of New Windsor, N.Y., will be evaluated for cause of death at the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington, police said.
Beginning Sunday, Hwang was on a camping trip with friends in a remote region of the park. Police were notified Tuesday evening he left the campsite earlier that day and hadn’t returned. The Lamoille County Sheriff’s Department led the search starting Wednesday morning, according to an earlier news release from the state police.
The Vermont State Police sent its scuba team out to search for Hwang on Wednesday afternoon alongside assistance from other agencies.
Hwang had last been seen with his friends wearing a wet T-shirt, shorts and no shoes around 3 p.m. Tuesday, according to the news release. He was not familiar with the area.
The park, which temporarily closed to daytime use during the search, has since been reopened to the public, according to Vermont State Parks.
“We are saddened by this outcome and send our condolences to the family and our appreciation to the Vermont rescue crews,” the agency said in a tweet on Thursday.
