NORWICH — Claudette Brochu stepped down from the Norwich Selectboard on Monday and filling the position will be discussed at a board meeting this week.
Brochu, who has served on the board since 2018, is moving out of town and announced her resignation from the board at a special meeting last week.
She won reelection in 2020 and was again reelected by voters in March.
“When I ran for reelection this year I was not sure I was moving out of town this year,” Brochu said Monday. “Everything happened rather quickly.”
Brochu’s term expires in March 2024 and the Selectboard has options for how to fill the post, which Chairman Roger Arnold said will be discussed at the board’s meeting on Wednesday.
Arnold said guidance from the Vermont League of Cities and Towns on statutory requirements is helpful and the board is likely to discuss appointing someone until an election can be held, which may be in November or at Town Meeting in March.
“This is a particular year when there are other voting opportunities other than Town Meeting,” Arnold said.
Brochu is a U.S. Army veteran and retired Dartmouth-Hitchcock nurse. She has been “semi-retired” since 2020 and now fully retired she said. She served as vice chair of the board in 2019 and chair in 2020.
Arnold said getting someone who is familiar with the Selectboard’s work as soon as possible will be important.
“There’s no shortage of issues that the new board member would need to become familiar with,” Arnold said. “We look forward to making an appointment forthwith.”
