VERSHIRE — Voters approved a $1.53 million bond for a new town garage in ballot voting on Sunday, according to results published on the town’s website.
Of the 103 ballots Vershire voters cast, 71 were in favor, and 32 opposed.
The bond allows the town to move forward with a plan — about two decades in the making — to build a new four-bay garage at 815 Vershire Center Road.
Slated to be built on land the town bought in 2019, the new structure will replace the town’s current garage, erected in 1969 at 608 Vershire Center Road.
The current garage is too small for modern trucks; its floors sank following flooding in Tropical Storm Irene in 2011; and the town needs to move its sand and salt piles away from the headwaters of the Ompompanoosuc River for environmental reasons.
The project already has received wastewater and stormwater permits from the state Agency of Natural Resources.
