NEW LONDON — The Selectboard last week opted not to ask voters at Town Meeting in March if the town should buy a 41-acre parcel behind the Hannaford supermarket.
Proponents at a Selectboard meeting on Dec. 20 said the so-called Cricenti property off County Road in New London could be used for workforce housing and a new police station, along with conservation.
But opponents said there is a newly formed committee that is reviewing possible sites for the police station and raised concerns about a purchase price that could exceed $3 million, according to the town’s Municipal Matters newsletter.
About 70 residents were at the meeting in Whipple Hall, according to the town.
The Selectboard voted 2-1 that a proposed article to purchase the property was premature and opted not to put it on the warrant for the 2022 Town Meeting.
