ORFORD — The second-ranked Rivendell Academy boys soccer team took care of business against No. 6 White River Valley, advancing to the VPA Division IV state final with a 3-1 victory over the Wildcats at Community Field on Tuesday.

Kyle Carter scored the opening goal for Rivendell (12-3-1) on a penalty kick in the 32nd minute. Josiah Welch doubled the Raptors’ lead four minutes later on a free kick from 35 yards out to make it a 2-0 game at halftime.

White River Valley (8-7-2) pulled within one in the 53rd minute on a goal from junior forward Robbie McShinsky, but Chris Pierce restored Rivendell’s two-goal lead off an assist from Josiah Welch. Carter Bacon made six saves for the Raptors; sophomore Tattin Griffin made eight for the Wildcats.

“It was a well-played match with both sides generating chances,” Rivendell coach Kevin Brooker said.

Rivendell will take on No. 1 seed Mount St. Joseph in the championship game at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Manchester, Vt. The Green Wave defeated the Raptors, 4-3, early in the season.
