DAVIS, Calif. — The Dartmouth College field hockey team opened its season — as well as a three-games-in-four-days trip to the Bay Area — with a 2-1 shotoout win over Cal Davis at the Aggie Field Hockey facility.
UC Davis (0-2-0) grabbed the game’s first goal, from Madison Theodore, shortly before halftime. The Big Green (1-0-0) responded in the second half when sophomore Bronwyn Bird intercepted a pass in the Aggies’ defensive third and fired home a shot for her first collegiate goal.
After scoreless hockey the rest of the way, including overtime, Dartmouth outscored UC Davis in the best-of-five penalty-stroke shootout, 3-1, to take the win. Rory Williamson, Bird and Helen Young. Hatley Post tag-teamed with Isabella Santucci in goal, the two netminders combinining on eight saves.
Dartmouth continues its western swing with a visit to Cal Berkeley on Sunday, following by a trip to neighboring Stanford on Monday.
BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Big Green took its opening two matches at the Lehigh Steel tournament, taking down Binghamton in straight sets (25-15, 25-17, 25-14), then rallying from a two-set deficit to overturn the host Mountain Hawks.
Ellie Blain had 16 kills in the opener to lead Dartmouth (2-0). Karen Murphy posted 31 assists, and Emma Engstrom had 16 digs to back the defense.
Murphy came back against Lehigh with a double-double of 32 assists and 19 digs as the Big Green prevailed, 24-26, 23-25, 25-20, 25-15, 15-13, in a nailbiter. Blain had 21 kills to go with 11 digs, and Makenzie Arent added her own double-double of 11 assists and 15 digs.
Dartmouth wraps the tournament on Saturday at 2 p.m. against St. Francis Brooklyn.
