PROCTOR, Vt. — If anyone is going to keep the Proctor High girls basketball team from winning the VPA Division IV state title later this month, they’ll have to find a way to shut down the Phantoms’ Maggie McKearin first.
White River Valley did just that on Thursday night, although it wasn’t quite enough to avoid a 44-35 defeat. The Wildcats’ Ella Perreault drew the assignment of silencing McKearin, a double-digit scorer on most nights but owner of just six points thanks to the close defensive attention.
Unfortunately for the Wildcats (2-4), Proctor is more than a one-player team. Isabel Greb made up for McKearin’s relative silence with 15 points, Hope Kelley added seven and the Phantoms’ defense limited WRV to just 13 second-half points.
Perreault also helped out on offense, sharing top-dog scoring honors with teammate Tanner Drury at 10 points apiece. Chelsie Trask had six for the Wildcats, who learn their VPA D-III tourney assignment on Monday.
NORTH CLARENDON, Vt. — The Hurricanes (5-4) held the Minutemen to a season low on offense to finish the regular season above the .500 mark.
Hartford put the result out of doubt with an 18-point opening quarter. Beth Dobrich led with 10 points, Sarah Howe contributed eight and everyone on the roster had at least one basket.
Hartford will likely host a first-round game in the VPA D-II tournament next week.
RANDOLPH, Vt. — The Olympians’ search for a second win continued to prove elusive as the Ghosts rolled past them to victory.
Bryce Ilsley topped the Oxbow ledger with 13 points, followed by 10 from Andrew Emerson and five from Brady Nickles. The O’s (1-8) will open the VPA D-III tourney on the road next week.
