LEBANON — Upper Valley divers won’t have to travel far to compete for a state title this winter. The Carter Community Building Association’s Dwinell Pool will host the NHIAA diving championships Feb. 19.
Typically held at the University of New Hampshire’s Swasey Pool in non-pandemic years, the event can’t be held at college venues this year because visitors are not allowed on campuses.
“We’re thrilled,” CCBA executive director Kerry Artman said in a Wednesday phone interview. “They (NHIAA) reached out to us, actually. We’re really excited, and we’ve really enjoyed having the (local) high school divers with us this winter. Should be good to have the state meet here.
“We’re able to do all the safety protocols and utilize our upper and lower pool deck; we’re confident in executing. I think it’s great for the Upper Valley to host the diving in general.”
Dwinell Pool is a 25-yard glass-enclosed indoor swimming pool with six lap lanes with a diving board. Following protocol, Artman said no spectators will be allowed and warmups will begin at 3:30 p.m., with competition commencing at 5 p.m.
The Hanover diving team has been using the CCBA’s facility this season because Dartmouth’s Karl Michael & Spaulding Pools are not available for public use.
It has become tradition to hold the diving championships the night before the swimming championships. This year will be slightly different, as the Division I and II races will be held on separate days at the Salem Workout Club, on Feb. 20 and Feb. 21, respectively.
The NHIAA hands out individual championships from each event but combines team scores from both to crown a team swim and dive champion.
Last year, the Marauder girls picked up their third consecutive D-II championship at UNH. Then-senior Amelia Wallis won her fourth straight diving trophy, while Hanover’s 200-yard freestyle relay team broke a state record, winning the race in 1:39.95.
After winning back-to-back state titles, Hanover finished behind champion Oyster River by 78 points for boys honors.
The revised winter postseason schedule also confirms that spirit championships will be held virtually. Neither basketball nor hockey have venues to hold their semifinal and championship rounds currently; typically those events are held at neutral sites.
