HANOVER — Former Dartmouth men’s soccer player Dawson McCartney was selected by the Portland Timbers with the No. 43 pick in the second round of Thursday’s MLS SuperDraft.

McCartney played three seasons for the Big Green before transferring to Notre Dame this fall, where he is slated to play the spring 2021 season. His arrival in South Bend, Ind., reunited him with former Dartmouth coach Chad Riley.

He was named Ivy League Rookie of the Year in the fall of 2017 after producing two goals and eight assists in his debut season. A midfielder, McCartney was named second-team All-Ivy in his two final seasons as he scored six goals and tallied six assists.

The New Jersey native captained the U-18 Philadelphia Union Academy team and participated in U.S. Soccer national training centers before his college days.

Earlier in the night, Josh Bauer was selected by Atlanta United FC with the 31st overall pick. A resident of Bedford, N.H., the defenseman is the most decorated player in University of New Hampshire history. In 2019 he was named a first team All-American, and was a second team All-American in 2018. Over the 60 games he played in his Wildcat career, Bauer scored 10 goals and 10 assists for 30 points.
